During mining? That compute would be just as much as mining itself. I was under the impression that the merkle root was only validated if the POW was under the diff threshold. I mean trillions of hashes are being given per second, were are sayong each one is checked against the reported block template to the pool?

Sure, only if over the difficulty threshold. But that's what pools count anyway, and would be impractical to fake it. The same principle of mining itself. But they have to be verified!
