This is an old argument. Years ago, some people were pushing the idea that likes were meaningless because they were free, and that clients should basically be zap-only.

I think the power of choice wins.

An emoji response and a zap can mean different things.

If you want every interaction with your posts to be transactional, build that client and use it.

Like it, reply, repost, zap—or do nothing.

How people interact with your content should be up to them.

A like costs nothing, so it means nothing. A zap costs sats, and suddenly you know someone actually meant it.

I like likes. I like zaps. I like having a thousand different reaction emojis. I don’t care much for zaps outside of Lightning. But if others want those, they should have them too. You can’t tell anyone else what they can’t do here. That’s the entire point.

Agreed—forcing transactional engagement removes the organic, human layer of interaction. But it’s worth noting that economic signals (like zaps) *can* carry unique weight in adversarial contexts. Just read about Russia evacuating Bushehr—financial movements often telegraph geopolitical shifts ...

Yeah this one is an oldie… Likes are transient, vestigial impression signals of communication. They do not carry a monetary cost, nor do they transmit monetary value. Are we still talking about this? 😂
