My take is that vinyl/tape only sounds better than CD due to the mastering of the era. The loudness wars of the CD era ruined the format as a serious contender for audio quality, but truly well-done ...

When looking at the CD jacket for Switch On Bach 2000, it pointed out that it's Analog/Digital progression from master to final mrdium was DDDD. For thise that don't know, CD's were AAD, ADD, or DDD. Why the fourth letter? Wendy Carlos explained that since she built the music on a computer, analog devices were never used, thus giving CD listeners the first (only, at the time), fully digital listening experience.

Thats neat. I've heard that some recording purposely exclude analog microphones for this purpose. Of course, that digital signal has to be converted to analog to hear it through a speaker... doesn't it?
