⚡️🧊 FUN FACT - Bitcoin’s source code is stored in the Arctic permafrost… in an archive designed to last 1,000 years.
In 2020, GitHub selected active public repositories from numerous open-source projects for its Arctic Code Vault.
In total, approximately 21 terabytes of data were recorded on 186 reels of archival film and then transported to Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago located in the Arctic.
Among the projects preserved was Bitcoin’s source code, alongside Linux and Python, among others.
On July 8, 2020, these archives were deposited in a former coal mine buried deep within the mountain and protected by permafrost.
The goal was to create a physical backup capable of remaining readable for centuries, even if the platforms and technologies used today were to eventually disappear.
Obviously, it is neither users’ BTC nor their private keys that are stored beneath the Arctic. It is something different… the instructions that explain how Bitcoin works.
