⚡️🎮 ICYMI - Microsoft wants to show you ads in games, timed to the moments when you're not playing

It has filed a patent application for a system that reads game-engine data to find natural breaks, like right after a boss fight, at a checkpoint, on a loading screen or in a menu. The game then pauses and plays a video or static ad.

After each ad, you get a new ad-free "credit," 30 minutes in the patent's example. When it runs out, the game starts looking for your next break.

The filing targets free-to-play games but names no specific titles, and a patent application doesn't guarantee it ever ships.
