It's a spectacle designed to scare the public and have them disarmed. This is also why our governments have been soft on crime for 30+ years. Politicians need the criminals to scare the public into submission to rigorous regulations.

I for sure have 20+ household items that are potentially just as dangerous. Top of mind: hammers, screwdrivers, crowbar, kitchen knives, fireplace poker, brooms, walking stick, various gardening tools,... "Jeez, you have a broom,... You are a danger to society..."
