Showing the network that the currency can be yanked around by knee jerk ineffective reactionary minority forks OTOH can do significant damage to the market value of those fees.

Knee jerk to you. For many of us who have been paying attention it's been a 3 year process. If it doesn't happen now, it will be more painful in the future as the opened attack surface will be used and node runners will be the ones who suffer. Which will bring centralisation.
