Might just need another node with high gain , outdoor antenna to discover distant nodes.

That's currently not possible. I have a small yard, and it's pretty much entirely covered by trees, so I can't put up a solar node outdoors because it will never stay charged because my yard has too much shade. I am toying with the idea that I might be able to get a power over ethernet node set up, but that won't help if the power ever goes down.

Isn’t there a way to attach a fibreglass omnidirectional antenna on the outside of your dwelling? Maybe just on a temporary standoff held by the closed window frame. That would at least give maximum range on that side.
