This reminds me a bit of R. Crumb's Keep On Truckin'. The timing is similar, in that everybody started using the meme later, and many associate it that way. I haven't researched it, but my guess is those packs of gum were mostly not licensed by Roth, but I have little to base that on. For that matter, Pepe is like that as well.
