Ah. So they can prop him up on pillows briefly disconnected from whatever machines are involved? If that is true (& we don't know that it is), that wouldn't show that he is truly conscious, aware, & in physical or mental control of his body. Can he speak? Is he capable of opening his mouth & having coherent words come out?

Without evidence, I think we have to assume the answer is no.
