Are you suggesting that this wouldn't have happened if a tiny number of privacy nuts hadn't opted out at TSA checkpoints? Because if not, then the only difference is that their data isn't in as many government databases. Still seems like they're winning on the data security front.

I think it is important not give them grounds to say "you chose to do [supposedly optional thing] Decline to consent verbally and in writing whenever possible. But it will not help you until 5 years later when they admit that it was illegal without your consent.
