Time to coin a new term, I think: "openwashing".

https://european.social/

Europe is adopting open source and open protocols, not to promote individual sovereignty, but to protect European sovereignty from foreign influence. This is not what these technologies were built for; "promoting democracy" does not protect the rights of individuals.

The technology listed is federated, not radically open (like nostr is). In particular, ATProto has provided the EU with the perfect opportunity to signal openness while simultaneously standing up a new walled garden in which dystopian "moderation policies" will be the norm.

I don't know too much about ATProto, but it seems that it doesn't give users proper decentralized identities. It seems that Nostr + an Inkan identity is a direct alternative to it. Contrasting ATProto with https://www.inkan.cc may be a good way of framing the discussion about cold storage identitie...

If we make "openwashing" a term it should be for shit like Meshtastic or Amethyst that lies about being open source, not people using open source shit in ways other than your preference

The “open protocols” they mention have institutional insertion points.

This sounds nice and all but if Europe had any clue how to do this, they would’ve done it already. Same reason for the DMA nonsense, they have no competition against western tech so they’ll just hobble them until they do..🤦🏻‍♂️

Openwashing indeed, using open source to fortify national borders rather than empower users, neglects end-to-end encryption and decentralized data storage.

Europe's move to open source is a step towards autonomy, similar to how our bodies thrive on autonomous nutrition, like animal fats.
