Is it worth getting back into Magic the Gathering? Haven’t had time to play in 3 years.

I hear they have a lot of power creep lately to maximize profits for Hasbro.

Anyone here been playing it a lot recently?

I hear they have a homepage on the world wide web where we can trade playing cards. Have you heard of this?

Try Balatro

Yes. It’s more fun in person but their mobile app is pretty damn impressive. Caveat: it’s a huge time suck if you let it be.
Crizzo · 83w
Power creep is the TCG sales model. They aren't interested in balance, they want your old cards to become obsolete so you have to keep buying.
McAnderson · 83w
I feel happy playing casually with premade stuff, getting surprised by cards as you go. I know that won't make sense for conpetitive players wanting to optimize their decks, but it's enough for us to have some fun 🤡

Man, Magic: The Gathering! I could give my 20yo white horses a spin.
billymacdo · 83w
played in 96, back then the cards made sense. tried to teach my kid recently and gave up saying “sorry bud, I have no idea wtf”

Take a peak at Parallel. It’s free to play on Steam and a really fun new TCG. Art work is pretty awesome.

Magic has indeed seen power creep, aiming for Hasbro's profit. It's become more of a business than ever, with card values and game mechanics shifting to encourage spending. If you're looking for the game you left, it might feel different now. #MagicTheGathering

Play MtG Arena Free to play its a little grind at first but it doesn't take too long until you can craft the good cards for some highly competitive decks In person with physical cards is more hassle than its worth
ew0k · 83w
I decided not to download the phone app because the spyware tracking is so high. I’m surprised mtg isn’t more popular amongst bitcoiners if only because of the mtgox history. Would totally enter a bitcoiner tourney 🤙

It's gone downhill a lot the last few years IMO. It feels like it's turned into a total cash grab from endless reprinting of desirable cards, alternate art, special cards, etc. Power creep is pretty crazy. I just play commander and cube draft on occasion now. The new stuff just isn't appealing to ...
waitwaitwait · 83w
It all depends on the format you play. Modern costs a lot and the power creep is huge, it forces you to spend $$$ almost every year. Forget Legacy. Pauper costs nearly nothing but you have to like the playstyle. Commander I don't know I don't play it. Advice: Pauper is OK; the rest is wasting mo...

Dude. I feel like we would’ve been friends in high school. Otherwise I have little to add to this conversation because I haven’t played in years!
Nyoro~n · 83w
I've gone back to it numerous times over the years, mostly through limited/draft play. It's always hard to tell whether a set is fun to draft from reading card spoilers or comments, just go play 🤭 keeping up with constructed formats is difficult for any playgroup, and collecting is an ever-expan...

I haven’t played since Urza’s Legacy.

It sounds like the unchecked issuance of new cards is reducing the quality of the game for the players. But it's working pretty well for Hasbro. Similar to stuff in fiat world.

Almost completed my Arabian Nights set... three to go! Used to play with my son, but he has "moved on". Now trying to master (learn) Go and get back into Chess.

I prefer nostr:npub1yjryjq2kdganuc69zme9agk0q4rjcnlxel3fwp3xm9z68phsxngsqd33a9 these days 🧡🧡 Great community and better scarcity ;)
Glacier · 83w
Have you tried Ascension? GMechanics are great for replaying. Deck is set so no power creep.

I stopped playing more than 20 years ago... 🙄 I guess it was a completely different game than today... 🤷 Btw, I still find it funny how many people don't know nowadays that MtGox was Magic the Gathering Online Exchange before being a #bitcoin exchange. 🫂

Commander is pretty fun. Funny enough, when Wizards of the Coast started to get involved in directly making cards for the fan-made format, it got worse. It would have been better if they left it alone. I'd recommend Edison format in Yu-Gi-Oh, if you ever want to try something a bit different.

I’ve allays been a fan of Pokémon. Simple and fun. I guess I have fond memories of playing it with my kids years ago.

I’ve been playing some MTG Arena recently over the past few years, after a long hiatus since the mid 90’s. Complexity is a bit disorienting, and tough to keep up with all of the new releases/formats, but still very fun. Would love to sync up and play a few rounds on Arena sometime if you’re up...

Yep I play all the time and my oldest son is a tournament player. You need to stay more recent then modern horizons 3 to be powerful enough (my old decks from tempest/stronghold/weatherlight don't stand a chance) But most games are draft by set only, so the power and themes are pretty balanced by ...

Best use case for ordinals/inscriptions is a decentralized version of mtg in my opinion. Fork x mage to verify you actually own the deck you are playing with (each card being an inscription) and make the game free from centralized control but still have some scarcity. Not just full proxy.
SweedWick · 83w
Great game- haven’t played in a long time and the teens I see playing are more into the card collecting and trading. But they also aren’t true nerds. I tried getting back into it with my daughters… they had other interests I soon found out :)
Romaric · 83w
You mean the physical card game? No matter the profit, it's still a great game imo, the best of it's kind actually
I)ruid · 83w
I play a lot but mostly on MTG Arena. The digital game is way more efficient to play and I can get more games in with limited time as well as play with friends remotely. The digital card and deck management is excellent too. I would definitely recommend Arena over physical cards if you don't have...
