since code is so cheap to generate, an ai can basically replicate your product just by looking at it, opensource just makes it easier to steal your architecture if you’re actually good at programming/agentic engineering and have built a good codebase.

Oops, doesn’t matter, joe bob down the street now cloned your engineering expertise at the click of the button and is now selling your product. Seriously reconsidering my stance on open source in the agentic era.

It seems like our entire global workforce will be asking this question soon. You are at the vanguard. The rest are asleep

open source makes the models better so your competitors can make an even BETTER project than ours in one prompt 😅

You can do your own clone of Twitter or FB, but you don't have the network effect. the same should be true for open source, there can be clones but if people trust you and your project collaborators i think your project will have an edge over an AI clone with zero collaborations. There is other prob...

No skill? No problem, pay daddy AI for stolen skill. Also basically all human knowledge is at risk of being lost because llms absorbed it and are gate keepers for all past and future knowledge.. But not to worry...

Singularity. I can emphasize with how you feel. Might be inevitable anyways. Engineering is a fancy way to say turning ideas to code. Its net positive for humanity IMO.

OSS only works if there is mutual benefit *and* collaboration There is a reason NFDB is not open source

Even if it's not open source, we might get to the point where AI just needs to have a look at what it does. But that aside, totally agree. What's funny is that creating a regulator moat is a pretty sound business strategy now, you have licenses, and bob down the street can't AI those licenses, so ...

psst... paid source

At some point you realize enough is already out there to surpass you if someone is willing to put in the work and design. Closing the source is too late to stop people from building clones. The communities of people who recognize your talent is where the value is at.

Selling software was never a long term strategy in my opinion; selling hardware is much more difficult to replicate. You can have all the code and schematics you want, but you can't fabricate 2nm chips in your 3d printer. I think consumers will prefer open source software. Especially in the blo...

This is an “always has been” moment isn’t it? It’s just faster now. If your goal was to share when publishing as open source, then this is consistent with your goal.
