Selling software was never a long term strategy in my opinion; selling hardware is much more difficult to replicate. You can have all the code and schematics you want, but you can't fabricate 2nm chips in your 3d printer.

I think consumers will prefer open source software. Especially in the blockchain industry, where security is paramount. No black boxes. Wasn't that the point of open source; peer review and verified code.

Besides that, Apple routinely updated iOS with jailbreak mods; free research and development. You'd see spikes in older device sales with every jailbreak, as people searched for the dated firmwares (often sold for a premium). Going back to my point, hardware is the long term strategy.
