Google will turn off Search for schools that reject its AI.

Starting early 2027, Google will switch off AI tools for K-12 students unless administrators opt in. But schools that restrict AI entirely will also lose access to Google Search. Students will see a message from their school saying it is not available.

Google's Chris Phillips said "Search and A.I. are deeply integrated." Schools cannot disable AI Overviews or AI Mode on their own.

Google's apps are ubiquitous in U.S. classrooms, and Chromebooks are the most widely issued student devices. Reject the AI, lose the search engine.

Other search engines exist. The world needs to decentralise and remove monopolies. Google is trying to force lock-in for its products and has turned into exactly the sort of company that it used to try and disrupt.
