Maybe a ["parent", "<parent-id>"] tag on the subgroup?
Also, I was thinking of using a tag ["hierarchy", "parent/root/group"] for the root group and ["hierarchy", "children/subgroup"] for the subgroup. I think that would make filtering easier.
