For a city that is a bit infatuated with itself, the lack of a civic acknowledgment of this event is peculiar. It was certainly the beginning of a terrible struggle for the Ramaytush Ohlone, and even for the de facto Indigenous slaves brought by the Novohispanic settlers. It was the start of cattle-driven ecological devastation in the Bay. So many things worth remembering and learning from.

San Francisco can celebrate the 49ers and even our phone area code, but is unable to even talk about this foundational event.
