I finally organized my work notebooks this weekend. I have an unbroken chain of handwritten notes stretching back to 2012. Thousands of pages about political organizing and advocacy in San Francisco, across three different jobs. It's wonderful to have this tangible record of what's effectively my second career.

I've been hosting members of the #Alphabet Workers Union (#CWA 9009) all weekend for their summit here in San Francisco. It's wonderful to support fellow CWA members (I'm a CWA 9404 member!) and to learn about their organizing work.

There is so much overlap between their concerns, as tech workers, and the concerns of our city and nonprofit workers here in San Francisco, particularly around AI.

Commercial DNA tests are very limited when it comes to Indigenous American ancestry. The most useful tool I've found is the MDLP project on GEDmatch. Its "World" Oracle gave me a very close genetic distance of 2.73, modeling my sample as half Luiseño (a Native people from coastal Southern California), a quarter Lumbee (a North Carolina tribe), and a quarter Corsican.

While all of these are proxies, the mix makes sense: it reflects the algorithm balancing my roots in the borderlands between Aridoamerica and Mesoamerica, with a blend of Mediterranean and African ancestries.

Perhaps the difference lies in how each of them came to be part of the US: Texas had been a de facto independent country when it was annexed by the US and probably would have been recognized as such by Mexico if it had not been annexed. California and the rest of the Mexican Cession were the spoils of war, criticized by many in the US, including Lincoln and most famously by Henry David Thoreau, as imperialist.

For a city that is a bit infatuated with itself, the lack of a civic acknowledgment of this event is peculiar. It was certainly the beginning of a terrible struggle for the Ramaytush Ohlone, and even for the de facto Indigenous slaves brought by the Novohispanic settlers. It was the start of cattle-driven ecological devastation in the Bay. So many things worth remembering and learning from.

San Francisco can celebrate the 49ers and even our phone area code, but is unable to even talk about this foundational event.

On this day 250 years ago (the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul), the first wave of non-Ramaytush-Ohlone settlers settled in what is now San Francisco. Nearly all were the Sonoran families of the soldiers assigned to the Presidio, a few were mestizo and Indigenous servants or coerced men from other parts of the Californias and Mexico, along with 287 cattle, all led by an Arizona-born criollo colonial commander.
