I just realised that I have been resisting to sign-up for Signal backup for so long, which tells me I don't actually want my chat to survive long term, I want it to be ephemeral and selectively choose what to backup... This is interesting and I don't know how popular is that preference?

Same. For mostly text-based chats for work, that is. For family chats that have basically a full drive of pics in there, different story, and I kinda would want all that on my own sovereign drive, automatically.

historically I had a tendency to keep everything but now we live in a world where every bit of information is just working against you in the long run so the less history we have the better because evil cunts are working 24/7 to weaponize all the data against us
