Taking issue with you not knowing Spanish is just projecting their own shortcomings. If Spanish was the real issue, they ought to be helping you with that.
Wanting you to pick fields is not unique to Mexicans. People in general are jealous and very few people actually want you to succeed. They'd rather take you down with them (like spending boatloads of money on booze).
