i've got this feature in development on my orly upgrade to the full smesh stack. its purpose is to minimise traffic and battery use on mobile devices and it's mostly already fully done. the client detects if the relay can do this and then uses it preferentially instead of directly contacting the other relays.

i'm currently finishing the base functions - kind 1 forum and marmot MLS DM protocol, but until i've got all that working, the signer extension is in flux and mozilla's default requirement for their signature to be on extensions obstructs general usage. once all the features are working, i can consider the signer stable as it covers all of the ways it will be used in deployment and on users' devices.
