Why do I feel the need to say thank you to the grumpy person staring at everyone in the self-checkout corrals? They did nothing but make sure I didn't steal or break anything.

My local grocery store went the opposite route: maybe a 25 year old guy who has some developmental issues just stands there and sings songs all day (loudly) and says pleasant things.
