in the last few months i learned that USB-C is a total crock of shit.

bits of fluff that inevitably get inside both the plug and socket can cause the device to not be able to switch to deliver full power. i sold a 20A USB-A based charger i got with my motorola defy 4 years ago, on the basis that it's a proper factory certified and the buyer had already charged his iphone 30% in one hour with it (which is about what you would expect from 20A, i think, he was happy).

some innovators like yubikey made blade connectors - still one-directional but at least they are thin. but i learned in the process that apple did some bogus bullshit that has basically stopped most hardware manufacturers (socket side) from creating a simple unidirectional blade connector standard from existing because of fear of litigation from apple.

the stack of reasons why to never buy apple hardware if you are a principled person continue to stack up. and kudos to yubikey for making blade connectors for usb-a. because it always was a blade connector. since micro and now usb-c, it has been turned into a hemi-sexual and now fully bisexual cloaca instead of the simple unidirectional blade that it could have been.

see, i grew up in the days of game cartridges that were literally like modern pci-express sockets. and i remember, there was an effort to make a pci-e standard that was literally a blade connector, but it failed because it was only for discs and it should have been universal. pci-e is universal in devices. phones even have pci-e adapter circuits inside them, they are used to carry memory and device signals to secondary chips. but not outside the device. and there is

absolutely

no

reason

why

that they haven't become the actual replacement for usb. instead we have EU mandated transexual plug/sockets that literally won't charge properly if there is fluff from your pocket inside them. which wouldn't even get there if it was a blade. big wide contact surface. instead we have miniscule wires that get clogged with some lint and game over.

I agree with most of this, though, USB-C is just plain useful in a mostly useful formfactor. I detest that the cords need electronics in them to function. That is the most retarded thing ever. At most, it should be simple resistors signaling current capacity. I do actually wonder if there are comp...

You can scrape out the lint with a pin to fix the issue. It would be ideal if didn't have to be this way but it's not that big of a deal for me.
