I did this with my kids and it worked pretty well. They preferred 5e d&d. It's well in line with the way they think. Personally, I like OSE. There's so much lore and history built into 5e that it feels a bit constraining to me. OSE has modern sensibilities but feels more open since it doesn't have 50+ years of world building along with it. The kids humor me and play both.
