Every day we have folks calling up, some of them not technical, and some in their 80s, asking for help configuring ATAs.
If they order the ATA from us, we preconfigure it, and that avoids most problems. But there are ISPs that do CGN, which even NAT traversal mitigation like STUN don't sort.
SIP is kind of fragile as protocols go, sadly. And I just don't think the market was ready for VoIP replacing landlines.
