It just occured to me that I've had seven employers in my lifetime and all of them started out as little, self-funded projects, and then grew organically.

Like, that's actually the normal path: Someone invests *their own* capital and customers pay them for their products, and it takes years to break even. That's why they have to be very responsive to customers and that's why capitalism leads to better products.
