I mean, I read Hodlonaut's piece and I'm super sympathetic and into Knots now, but I have heard that the activation mechanism for BIP110 is a bit questionable and of successful would result in a "hard" fork.. am I way off??

There are a few ways 110 can activate. It’s looking like it will be user activated (nodes) Core will have to propose a user rejected fork or Bitcoin will have 2 chain tips forever battling until one chain forfeits. Core chain will have wipe out risk and knots chain won’t.
