I've always mowed mine diagonally for effect, and the striping is visible but not great because I have a 22" toro self propel. One of my summer projects this year is to fill a PVC pipe with mortar and attach it for more dramatic stripes.

I prefer trees and other plants over big empty lawns, big lawns look dead and are big waste of water.

Anyone can have such a lawn. You just gotta put in the work. Or pay someone to do so. Every neighbourhood has a #1 and a jealous #2 and the rest who gave up long ago.
