True, but it's a bit of a stretch. Fasces were a bundle of sticks handed out to soldiers to beat people with to get them in line, adopted by the fascists as a symbol of strength. A faggot-gatherer was a near useless person who eeked out a meager existance by gather sticks to use as firewood.
