DM's are the most exclusionary form of communication possible, what does it have to do with ''Social Media'', not much at all.
Nostr is a protocol for PUBLICations, it is right there in the word,...
They are related because every client offers a DM function but most just fail silently because different nips or relay config or whichever abstraction 99% or humans don't care about.
You meet someone online and want to pop them a message instead of telling them publically to message them on another app. Pretty normal behaviour.
