Tailscale client is opensource and basically is ok. Now there is also an opensource serwer for tailscale which coordinates the connections. But. Btw if you use a vpn and you want to use tailscale on your phone at the same time, it is not too easy and convenient.

Why don't you just run wireguard on your own. It isn't like you lack the technical skills that Tailscale is supposed to make easier.

Been using it for years, nothing to complain about. They make money with the corporate accounts.
