I think you made a valid point, and I hadn't really thought much about what the difference between "look at" and "read" might mean mechanically.
I think interpreting "read" more as "decipher," which would require a Linguistics check or magical aid, works to separate them, and I hadn't thought about it before.
It also makes it far less likely the whole party will be affected by the fascination effect from the allip's scribblings.
