Not to bring the OP_RETURN debate back to life or anything. But I thought that most of the people running Bitcoin Core had adjusted the maximum size of data in OP_RETURN outputs to 83 bytes.

Wasn’t that the whole point?

A lot of people just accept the default. But really, I think its a signalling thing. Core would prefer data be put in OP_RETURN so your node doesn't have to keep nonmonetary data in memory. Memory is much more expensive than HD space. Did it work, idk. Perhaps someone should gather statistics.
