I recommend not watching The Dark Crystal too soon, then. Honestly, that's probably more due to the writing than the creature effects. It's also a bit less distracting from the plot than David Bowie in tight pants trying to seduce a teenager during a song. I saw both of those movies for the first time as an adult, also. But, I do remember an old webcomic called "Alas" where one of the characters learned contact juggling just by rewatching Labyrinth, and now I consider that one of the more believable things about the character.
