Your experiences are interesting. In my last comment, I was speaking to a broader trend, not software engineers specifically, though it's interesting to hear your perspective. I was there in the mid 2...
It’s interesting. It’s just a very subtle form of xenophobia. For example, my team wanted me to go out to lunch with them to a local area restaurant that was very popular with people there. When I walked into the restaurant with them the waiter pulled out these very nice looking leather clad menus. My team protested very loudly and the waiter went back to his counter put those menus away and got ones out that were laminated. I asked my team what was wrong and they said the waiter saw you and pulled out the tourist, menus or the menus that they used for non locals. We protested and said “no this is our boss get the regular menus”. The menus that the waiter originally pulled out the prices were more than double.. Another time one evening I purchased something at a local shop and a member of my team was with me. The clerk short changed me. She went back later and confronted the clerk and the clerk shrugged and said “so what? he’s an American he’s got plenty of money“… She said to the clerk; “that American is my boss and you stole from him. Give me the money so I can give it back to him.”
