It is also the best thing to happen to bitcoin. Nothing can be built on a foundation of sand. And in hindsight it has become clear, that simply using a hardware wallet that you got from some podcaster shilling his referral code is not a safe way to hold your coins.
The industry will need to evolve and provide simple to follow best practices. I don't know what they should look like, but without this incident no progress would have been made.
