In 1975, a 24-year-old Kodak engineer, Steven Sasson, invented the world's first self-contained digital camera.

Instead of leading the digital revolution, Kodak chose to "bury" the invention, patenting it in 1978 but refusing to commercialise it for decades for fear of destroying their film sales of over a billion dollars.

This hesitation ultimately led to Kodak's decline and its bankruptcy filing in 2012.
