Lightning addresses are unacceptably dependent upon centralized identity tokens (domain names) that have a history of heavy censorship by courts, activist NGOs, governments, registrars and registries. What if someone who is not allowed to use the Internet is using a domain provider, and the registrar or registry decides to suspend the domain? The Lightning standard needs to support onion addresses natively.

Nostr people correctly and truthfully point out that Mastodon being dependent on domain names is unacceptable centralization but seem perfectly content with every zapper being the tenant of the lords of the domain name system.

What are your thoughts on FIPS? Maybe it can get around the centralized infrastructure problem entirely

I feel like, ultimately, XMR address in bio is the gold standard here. The region of people who are high-agency enough to set up Lightning but low agency enough not to be able to do XMR seems very small. Even smaller on something like nostr, where I assume absolutely everyone already has an active X...
