I'm also curious on the VPS angle for tor only vs hybrid. Is there a reason we're not pushing for nodes at home running behind a reverse VPN tunnel? The idea of running my Bitcoin infrastructure with any sort of key material on someone else's computer never struck me as a sensible trade off even with the privacy benefits. You seem able to speak to any potential drawbacks this may have though that I haven't observed, but it does seem like this accomplishes much of what tor does, without as much likely impact on routing.
