any plumbers on here? water heater needs to be replaced, but there's an old decommissioned radiant floor system in my basement. it was installed in 2003 when the house was built, but from what i can tell hasn't been used since at least 2018. the manifold definitely needs to be rebuilt. trying to decide if i should try and get it up and running again, or just replace the water heater with something cost effective. #asknostr #plumbstr

If you can pressure test the tubing, that would be a good first step. You don’t want to replace the manifold to find that you have a leak somewhere else.

radiant heat is nice. fix it if you can

Most systems I’m familiar with use a separate boiler and an antifreeze solution in the lines. Eliminates freezing problems for all those lines when not working and floor heating problems don’t keep you from enjoying a nice warm shower.

Cleveland Bitcoin has a plumber in the group, you need someone to come and take a look?

Licensed plumber here, but all of my experience has been in southern states, so no practical experience with radiant systems. 🤷😆

Perfect opportunity to get hashing and heating. In my opinion very much worth working through the learning curve. There's more resources than ever out there. Check out the heatpunks forum for ideas or as a place to ask for guidance, everyone there is more than happy to help. https://forum.heatpunks....

I do these often. Is the basement a finished living space? And you are obviously replacing a boiler rather than a "water heater"? You can use it again. But ask if there was a reason why it was decommissioned. Before you hook it up completely make sure it is set up nicely for purging the air out of t...

You're on the right track to see if it holds pressure. Confirm that you have oxygen barrier pex piping that inhibits oxygen from permiating throught the piping wall and causing all sorts of havoc. Like it was mentioned, this is a perfect oppertunity to get a heat exchanger connected to a hydro miner...
