You forgot to mention that the USA and Britain and Russia (!) had signed a security agreement with Ukraine. The rest of Europe didn't.
The USA was obligated to defend Ukraine and could barely even bring themselves to send them arms. They were still reluctant to do it, even once the Europeans agreed to pay them for doing it. And now they don't do it at all.
