The idea that Core changed Bitcoin inherently is another one of those twists of the truth. The reality is, nothing about Knots meant you couldn't open up datacarriersize either. It's not a 'hack' -- it's a configuration file option.
I'm not thrilled with Core governance, and do still run Knots (without 110 activation of course). Keeping an eye on others like Utreexod, Florestad, Libbitcoin, and eben ProductionReady (not holding my breath here). Chaincode's funding is definitely an incentive distortion and the culture is indeed problematic at this point as folks like Jon Atack and Hodlonaut have pointed out.
But the knee jerk reaction of BIP-110 is failure to see the whites of their eyes before firing.
Stratum v2 and Datum so that F2Pool and others DON'T have the veto authority on ANYTHING is the way forward. And if we have to get reckless with am activation around anything, that's where it may be more warranted. You don't just risk potentially huge reorgs over a 1 year patch that doesn't even do half the things its being pitched to plebs for.
