Even if you try to reason with the idea of closed borders, given the huge size of the U.S borders with Mexico and Canada, you would need a strong federal oversight to actually enforce a closed borders...

How were borders done in medieval Europe? How are they done today in Afghanistan, NW Pakistan or Somalia?

Decentralisation, that's how.

Villages protect their turf against strangers and against neighbouring villages. They band together to protect against larger threats. A weak and distant government stations professionals on the international border and charges tolls, or outsources the job to a local notable.

The first half of that system is at least 100,000 years old.
