People that are outside of this debate or outside of Bitcoin have no idea this debate is even going on. That argument just makes no sense. We are inside an echo chamber of an echo chamber. Not that it's not important, but I'm saying that because the vast majority of people aren't even looking at Bitcoin because the price is down and even if they are, the majority don't know shit about bip110. The people who support BIP110 are the ones thinking long term. If bip110 fails, Bitcoin will likely not fail immediately, but it's culture and rule structure will likely be morally wounded. Miners and developers will know that they are the ones that can make the rules, and the nodes will loose their power. Developers and large Bitcoins institutions like exchanges and industrial miners/pools will now be open to capture by the state and by extension the rules of Bitcoin, and will no longer be protected by the anon, globally distributed network of nodes.
