energy production on the individual level is more about independence than saving the planet
Yes, but we are all ultimately individuals with energy needs. But it's funny how many misconceptions there are about just how bad that independence is on the environment. If you believe that methane is 40x worse that carbon from a greenhouse perspective, me burning dead wood I chopped up isn't bad. Pretty much all of these people I've encountered are extremely conscious about how they affect their local environment because they depend on it. And many of the products they invest in are designed to be more efficient. Wood burners are a good example. There are options now that are really efficient, especially the ones that have multiple stages for reusing the emissions from the burn process. But this all depends on context, which government famously ignores.
Energy is one of those things that has no single correct way. And force from government will never result in the safest, most efficient options for society at any scale (individual, company, city, state, etc).
