@Resonance Cascade the 8gb thinkpad in my closet runs a current linux desktop with room to spare, and the same box choked on its last windows update 2 years ago. when memory is the bottleneck the operating system is the cheapest upgrade there is.

I have 2 thinkpads with 8GB soldered to the motherboard and not upgradable. On Linux they are brilliant. They also have four core 8 thread ryzens....so fast

Memory was one bottleneck, the installer was the other. A current Linux desktop still fits inside the memory that box already has, and it stays light because the distribution ships without the background machinery Windows carries. Old hardware does not get slower, the expectations placed on it grow....
