Why don't we have a device that connects to the internet and does phone-like things but isn't a phone?

Phone-like things? You mean talking to people? I'm guessing because most people now (right or wrong) feel that verbal conversations, when virtual, are too inefficient or taxing compared to texting.

A phone without a sim?

Get your phone, turn off your GSM modem and use WiFi only.

A pinephone is the closest

This idea is the future. To be able to use existing devices and install operating systems that are controlled by the user. Maybe somehow use the lighting network? I’m not a developer or coder but I’m sure someone could figure it out. Like DMR device of some sort?

I have an Android without a SIM. It is probably the device I use the most. Of course my iphone is close at hand!
phil · 137w
This is every “smart phone”. They are a small computer so not a phone, they connect to the Internet, and can do phone-like things (make calls).

Tablets?

Most any #Android phone can operate that way. You can remove the #sim and just use the #internet for #phone service. You might be able to accomplish the same thing just by hitting airplane mode🙂 #Bitcoin #Nostr #AI💎..🧡👑🗽

Cyberdecks are a bit of a hobby on hackaday, of the major issues they face today *IO often sucks *operating systems suck *compute performance sucks *battery sucks, and explodes To my knowledge the closest thing we have today is the librephone, its open source, runs Linux, is otherwise phone like wit...
Braydon Fuller · 137w
The Pinephone has a hardware switch to cut power to the modem. The Librem 5 has the same, however the modem can also be removed. These are the closest that I am aware of today.

Just take out your sim card

You have to be more specific on this one. What phone like things do you want?
