Yes, a direct democracy could work and few (none?) countries have ever implemented it. It's also too much tolerance from the people. We tolerate third party interference - lobbying, NGOs, Israel, etc....
I’m not sure that most people tolerate those anymore and I bet you don’t know either. And the reason we don’t really know is because we don’t have the tools to measure this sentiment. At best, we have to rely on an organization doing a survey on the subject but can this organization be trusted? How can you know if this organization is bias or even worse corrupted? Most of the time you just can’t or at least not easily. Hence the necessity to deploy tools that will allow us to get an uncompromised sense of what people think or want.
