i had two large regular CFL bulbs with edison bases, like 150W equivalent. They lasted 12 years. the SOCKETS they were in, OUTSIDE, broke from sun bleaching before the bulbs burned out.

Hmm. I'm not seeing that. I have LED bulbs on the ceiling fan behind me - on about 12 hours a day. I had some bad ones in the past but whatever brand I bought a few years ago are lasting for a long time now.
I also have a pair of LED lights outside next to the front door and garage door on a light sensor. On 24 hours during the winter (too cold?) and 8-10 hours during the summer. They are also long lasting now.
